Since 2007 we have planted about 500 trees at Grota Funda, mostly from the OCA nursery in Alto Paraíso. Mid-December 2008 Lewis, Celcio, Amber, and Fabinho planted 129 additional trees, 50 of which were generously funded by Lynne Dorner and Lexington Dorner Peterson. João, Marcos, and the gang finished out the year planting even more trees for our wildlife friends to enjoy. We got a good mix this month: buriti and juçara for by the nascente (spring); banana to bring up nutrients in the soil; almeçega, avocado, mangaba-do-cerrado, caneleira, pitanga, pitomba, baru, jaca (jackfruit), and jaboticaba for Lynne and Lex’s “Hope Orchard”; and maracujá (passionfruit), which is technically a vine, because it’s really fun to eat.
